We encourage faculty to include this statement in their syllabi to signal support for first-generation and limited-income students. Research shows that acknowledging students' diverse backgrounds and explicitly welcoming them fosters a more inclusive, equitable learning environment. This small addition can make a meaningful difference in student engagement, confidence, and help-seeking behavior.

Recommended Syllabus Statement for First-Generation and Limited-Income Students:
Navigating college can be challenging, especially for students who are the first in their families to attend a four-year university or who come from limited-income backgrounds. At Tulane, a first-generation student is defined as an undergraduate whose parent(s) or guardian(s) have not earned a four-year degree. As a first-gen and/or limited-income student, you’re part of a growing community supported by programs, faculty, and staff dedicated to your success. If you ever feel stuck or unsure at any point this semester, please reach out. I am here to support you, and I encourage you to connect with the many resources available to help you thrive.
