Student Dismissal & Suspension

Any Newcomb-Tulane College student who is academically dismissed or suspended will be separated from Tulane University for a period of time.  Once the appeal process concludes, the office issuing the separation will notify other campus offices and place a hold on the student’s account.  Here are some helpful things to know in this situation:

  • The offices that issue a separation for NTC students are Academic Integrity, Quality of Work, and Student Conduct.
  • The office that issues the separation will communicate with the student directly and will provide instructions for return. Expulsion is not eligible for return.
  • Students should ensure that they have resolved any business with the University at the time of separation including:
    • Contact Financial Aid for questions about scholarships or aid.
    • Contact Housing & Residence Life to arrange a time to check out (during the semester).
    • Contact Student Accounts Receivable to learn if you have an outstanding financial obligation or if you will receive any level of refund.
    • Contact your Academic Advisor to discuss any outstanding questions about your courses or future enrollment. Students may not take courses elsewhere and transfer credits during a separation.

Remember to plan early for the best opportunity to enroll in classes for the term of return.

Return to NTC

You should plan to return in the middle of the preceding semester, for the best opportunity to enroll in courses. The process begins with the office that issued the separation.  This is a general overview of the return process:

  • Complete the online form here to notify the University that you plan to return.  The office that issued the separation will be notified with a copy of your submission. If you were suspended by the Office of Student Conduct, please contact that office directly.
  • You will be contacted at your Tulane email address with the next steps from a staff member in the office that issued the separation. This contact may not be instant.
  • You will have a hold on your record that will not be removed until the steps are complete.  Please look to see if you have other holds that need your attention as well.
  • Once cleared to return, the staff member will issue a return memo to campus offices and your academic advisor.  You will work with your academic advisor to register for classes.
  • At this stage, you should check in with Financial Aid and/or Student Accounts Receivable to discuss any financial questions.  Do not wait, ask questions early.
  • If you will live in on-campus housing, you should reach out to Housing & Residence Life to inquire about a room.
  • Your student ID card will be reactivated at the start of the term you return.
  • In many cases, you will not be permitted to return to campus or participate in Tulane-sponsored events until the suspension or dismissal period officially ends.  Please be mindful of the end date.
