Biography
Annie Gibson is the Director of Study Abroad and an Administrative Associate Professor. She works to ensure that the entire study abroad process, from recruitment and advising through students’ experiences in the field and upon return to Tulane, align with best practices in the field and with the OSA’s learning goals for intercultural learning. Her work with students – teaching and mentoring them on language acquisition, development of place-based awareness, intercultural competency and self-awareness, flexibility, and adaptability – is what her drives her. Her contributions don’t stop there. Annie researches ways in which cultural performances of identity become staging grounds to construct a sense of group cohesion across cultures, distances, and geographic imaginaries as well as teaching service learning and intercultural learning classes. She devotes her time outside Tulane to supporting the international community in New Orleans - translating for international artists and delegations at Jazz and Heritage Festival, organizing for Latin American culture krewes Bloco Sereia and Krewe Mayahuel, and conducting tours of New Orleans in Spanish and Portuguese for the New Orleans Tourism Board. Annie earned a B.A. in Spanish and Latino Studies with a Portuguese minor from Dartmouth College, a M.A. in Latin American Studies and a Ph.D. in Latin American Studies from Tulane.
