Description:

Alex Blue V (McGill University) will join Kyle DeCoste (Tulane) to discuss their collaborative work on “country rap,” a fast-growing music genre that offers images associated with rural, white working-class identity while drawing on sonic vocabularies associated with Black urban experience in the United States. Through analysis of the music produced by some of the genre’s most prominent artists, this talk explores the politics of race and place in country rap, the genre’s muddy origin stories, and the artists who craft their image and sound within this emergent genre.
