NTC Senior aims for Future Professorship with support from a Beinecke Scholarship

Mary Evelyne White, a rising senior majoring in French and Linguistics with a minor in Political Science, is focusing on her plans for graduate school and beyond thanks to the support she will receive from a Beinecke Scholarship.
The Beinecke Scholarship Program provides financial support for students pursuing graduate school studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. This support will help Mary Evelyne realize a dream she has cultivated since her first year at Tulane.
“As a freshman at Tulane, I began to seriously consider a career in academia when my French and Linguistics courses introduced me to a new kind of Francophone world – one steeped in colonialism and creoleness. I dove headfirst into studying the linguistic nuances of the Francophone Americas and soon realized that I want to contribute to the field as a scholar, and not just as a student.”
With the extra support and resources of the Beinecke Scholarship Program, Mary Evelyne has begun to expand her ideas about potential graduate school opportunities.
“The Beinecke scholarship has already allowed me to think bigger about the options I have for graduate education, from studying internationally to pursing more prestigious programs in the US. I feel so empowered to begin my graduate school applications with this achievement under my belt.”
Mary Evelyne plans to become a professor in French or Linguistics and is excited about researching and contributing to the academic field of study of French and French-based Creole languages.
“I aim to complete both a master’s and a PhD degree, and I am especially interested in completing at least one of these abroad, either in France or in the Francophone-Creolophone Caribbean. I would also love to continue my studies at Tulane in some capacity, as there exists a vibrant network of faculty and students researching Creole languages and cultures here.”
Driven by excitement for her field of study and determined to forge a path that would help her realize her future goals, Mary Evelyne worked with the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships to prepare her award-winning application.
“I received tremendous help from the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships in this process, especially at the post-nomination step. For almost a month, I worked with Dr. Edith Wolfe to refine my statement of purpose to a piece of writing that authentically conveyed my story, my academic interests, and my goals. It was incredibly challenging, but just as rewarding.”
