Biography

Melvin Avila is a New Orleans native pursuing a B.S. in Neuroscience with a minor in Chemistry and a B.S.M. in Finance with a minor in Accounting at Tulane University. Inspired by his experiences with local physicians, Melvin plans to continue his academic journey toward medical school. Deeply committed to service, Melvin has contributed to Tulane and the broader Louisiana community through involvement in Alpha Phi Omega, SSE Student Government, research with the Bogalusa Heart Study, and various volunteer efforts. As a Service Learning Assistant, he helps students engage with New Orleans through meaningful community partnerships. Melvin views leadership as a practice rooted in empathy, courage, and a desire for positive change. He has developed these qualities through roles in Alpha Kappa Psi, where he served as Risk Management Chair, and through his leadership in student-run programming. Each experience has sharpened his ability to support, guide, and uplift others. Motivated by the motto Non sibi, sed suis (“Not for oneself, but for one’s own”), Melvin is excited to continue building community and creating lasting impact at Tulane.
