Exceptional Medical Withdrawal Requests

Medical withdrawals after the last day to withdraw as noted on the academic calendar can be requested by students experiencing an unanticipated serious and documented medical condition that began or significantly worsened after the standard withdrawal deadline and prevented timely use of the regular withdrawal process. These exceptions are reserved for students experiencing medical circumstances that were unforeseeable prior to the last day to withdraw and prevented the student from withdrawing before the deadline.

Types of Exceptional Medical Withdrawals

Full medical withdrawal

A full withdrawal from all courses in a semester due to a documented medical condition requested after the last day to withdraw. Students must work with CMVSS to complete the full medical withdrawal and leave of absence process.

Partial medical withdrawal

Withdrawal from one or more, but not all, courses requested after the last day to withdraw. In these rare cases, students must demonstrate through medical documentation that the medical condition prevented them from completing the specific academic requirements of the affected course but were able to complete the required work on other enrolled courses.

The final deadline to submit a medical withdrawal and all supporting documentation is the last day of classes for the semester in question. Any request submitted after this date is considered retroactive. Retroactive requests are accepted for review for up to 30 days following that deadline.

Approvals of retroactive requests are exceptional and require demonstrated extenuating circumstances. In addition to the standard petition and medical documentation, the student must provide a written statement and supporting evidence explaining the precise circumstances that prevented them from submitting the request by the original deadline.

Invalid types of requests

  • Requests based primarily on poor academic performance.
  • Requests based on general dissatisfaction with a course.
  • Requests resulting from missing the standard withdrawal deadline for non-medical reasons.
  • Requests to remove previously earned "W" grades from courses dropped before the withdrawal deadline.
  • Requests for courses associated with an honor board violation. These will be reported to the Office of Academic Integrity

Submitting a Medical Withdrawal Petition

Students must contact their college advisor or CMVSS to obtain access to the medical withdrawal petition and the medical documentation form.

Requirements

Submit the petition

After contacting your college advisor and/or a case manager and getting access to the petition form, complete and submit the medical withdrawal petition and include any necessary documentation.

Meet submission deadlines

Requests should be submitted before the last day of classes for the semester in question. Retroactive requests must be submitted within 30 days of the last day of classes.

Provide medical documentation

A licensed healthcare provider must submit the required medical documentation form. All medical documentation of the impacted semester is confidential and reviewed by a Tulane University student health center provider. Submission of medical documentation does not guarantee approval. Petitions lacking required medical documentation for more than 30 days after the petition is submitted will be closed without review. Students will have to resubmit their petition.

Review Process

Medical withdrawal petitions are reviewed only after all required materials have been received. Petitions are reviewed biweekly during the academic year and monthly during the summer term.

Decisions

The NTC dean or designee reviews qualifying petitions. Students are notified via their Tulane email within approximately 15 business days of review. All decisions are final.

Financial Aid and Housing Considerations

Enrollment changes can affect financial aid, housing and other university services. Students are responsible for understanding these impacts before withdrawing.

  • Financial aid and scholarships are based on full-time status. Contact the Office of Financial Aid before making changes. Review this document from the financial aid office in full before requesting any enrollment changes.
  • Students on part-time status are ineligible for on-campus housing. Students who fully withdraw must complete the Housing Agreement Release process.
  • Dining and other university services may also be affected.

For questions about enrollment change requests, LOA procedures or petition requirements, contact your college advisor.
